Up until just a few days before it was a complete mystery how the day would run. All we knew was there would be food, Vita Coco and hard work happening!
As more people arrived T-shirts and training gloves generously supplied by Nike were handed out to us. We were now one! In our Spartan uniforms the community spirit was out in full force. Spurred on by the enthusiastic and encouraging MC for the day, Rapper, Ty, we began.
The gentle warm up soon turned in to a powerful body working session of core, abs and leg work, Push ups, squats and planks. Let us not forget the dreaded burpees.
I suppose that some of us thought, well since this was a “fun day” we might be given an easy time. Nope, this was as brutal as our Friday evening sessions. Perhaps even a little more so, since we were hear to prove to the people of Hackney that we are Spartans and this is how we really roll. The “games” followed next. Piggybacks and wheelbarrow races. Crazy hard work but so much fun. We cheered each other on with our mantra of “Ahooo”. The session ended with the traditional tug of war. Always a fierce competition with epitomises team work and joint strength. Every one was worthy competitor.
So, where to start? Arrived at Spartan Sunday a little early and was still contemplating whether or not to join in with the activities as I have been injured.
More people started to arrive was feeling more compelled to take part and once I saw people in their Spartan Fam t-shirts knew I had to take part with the rest of the family.
As we waited we had a storm cloud looming over us and the clouds opened on us like we were warriors about to go into battle #ahooo. No one was complaining though the rain was definitely refreshing in the heat.
So Chaka calls us all onto the court to start the first session and low and behold the cloud cleared like someone switched a switch.
The session started with the warm up and as we were doing it could hear new comers saying this is only the warm up. Had to laugh as I was saying the same during my first session.
I had managed to convince one of my good friends to come along who goes to the gym and can bench 140kg and he was talking like if he can do that this session would be easy.
Well he was definitely eating those words after the 1st couple of minutes and was rushing to the side when Chaka allowed us to have a water break. Having a water break was a 1st but was so needed in the heat that we were training in.
Brilliant movement! Positive, promising and powerful. I’ve been a Spartanian nearing 5 weeks and am very much involved and encouraged! It is beyond addictive and you actually want to do the videos and personally better yourself in order to achieve great/good or visible results. We have fun. We’re focused. I’ve socially been made to feel welcome via the Spartan Fam dinners, Run Dem etc. Chaka is a fair, focused and formidable individual…muscles on his teeth type tonk, buff, Hulk-Smash fitness yet takes the time to talk, ask how you are, connect, listen is a sincere + respectful way *don’t get it twisted though if your in a jovial/non-serious mindset, he will expose you…his remixed 180. tuck spin burpy will set you straight!* This is something special. Triple A Project - in closing, I’ve three words ‘Ahoo! Ahoo! Ahoo!’ - Thanks guys! (LyricL Nkechi)
That’s right, I’m giving up, but it’s not what you think.
I am giving up certain vices which I feel might be hindering my progress.
I have come to the realisation that yes, I am losing weight but am I making enough significant changes to improve my health.
Now, let me tell you about my first Spartan Fam work out on Friday. I had so much fun. I was really nervous beforehand. I arrived at 1948 in Shoreditch (Shoreditch is way too cool for the likes of me) very early and was greeted by the lovely @aliciacreate. She told me to take a look around the shop and chill. People started flitting in one by one and every one was ridiculously friendly. I gained a real sense of community from them all. They were so excited to be there and really took the time to make me feel comfortable and welcome.
